I usually say my firm helps executives grow their business by creating more awareness and sales leads via media exposure, digital communications, speaking opportunities and marketing communications. That usually gets a fruitful discussion going, but if they still don't get it I say "we do pretty much everything in the marketing spectrum except advertising." However, I don't think these will work with a 6-year-old!

I also feel your pain, Ned. My three year old son thinks I "make bacon," because whenever he asks what I "do" at work my standard reply is, "Mommy's at work to bring home the bacon!"

When you find the Answer, Ned, please let me know! My kids grew so accustomed to hearing me answer client calls on my crackberry that they began answering our home phone, "Kelly Lynch." I swear they think I talk on the phone for a living. (And, they're probably not that far off the mark!) In answer to their questions about our line of work, best I've been able to come up with is this..."I help people tell their stories."

I feel your pain, Ned. When my youngest daughter was about Nathan's age she used to visit the office on occasion and I tried to explain what I do for a living. One day I asked her what she thought my job was all about and she said, "You make pencils." I never placed another order for pencils with "Stern + Associates" printed on them!
